Travelling and visiting new places can feel intimidating when you or someone you love has a food allergy. I have both a dairy and nut allergy and struggle to find safe options. I recently spent the weekend in New Paltz, New York, and found a surprising amount of options to choose from. Here, I’ll break down an entire day’s worth of meals and treats!
Brunch
For brunch, I stopped at Main Street Bistro. This little spot does have a lot of options that contain nuts, but they were very diligent regarding cross-contamination and my allergies. I ordered the Bagel Grande, a toasted bagel with hummus, avocado, and tomato. There were many other options including egg options and sandwiches that you can choose from as well. Check out the Main Street Bistro here.
Midday Treat
The Udder Place is a little hole in the wall in New Paltz. I wasn’t expecting to find anything that I could have here, often dairy-free ice cream contains coconut or almonds. I was shocked to find their gluten free/ dairy free blueberry pancake ice cream did not contain nuts, and was instead made using oat milk. I was even more shocked that it tasted delicious! They also have a lemon sorbet that was safe to eat as well.
Dinner
I was pleasantly surprised with all of the options I found at Lola’s Cage & Gourmet Catering. From burgers to vegan chili I had a tough choice ahead of me at the counter when ordering. I decided on Grilled Chicken Pita with French Fries and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. They were very accommodating and even checked the packaging for the pitas to confirm none of my allergens were present. Check out Lola’s menu here.
These establishments were all very accommodating to my allergies and the items I got were delicious. Remember to always confirm ingredients with your server though, as recipes may change! If you’re in the area and have similar dietary restrictions, I highly recommend checking out these spots!
