Tupper Lake, located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. This charming town offers a perfect retreat for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike. With its pristine lakes, towering mountains, and picturesque forests, Tupper Lake provides a stunning backdrop for hiking, fishing, boating, camping and more.
The Tupper Triad
The Adirondacks are the home to many outdoors challenges, some harder than others. Consisting of three scenic peaks – Mount Arab, Coney Mountain, and Goodman Mountain the Tupper Triad can be done in one day, or over multiple days or months. Its charming, its short, and it doesn’t require the same commitment as the 46 High Peaks.
Each hike starts at a separate parking area, but all are short enough that you can complete them in one day, especially during the warmer months. Coming in at a total distance of 7.6 miles, this challenge is great for families, especially with younger children, solo hikers, or beginners.
I’ve completed the Triad in October, and it was without a doubt my favorite challenge I’ve done.
TIP: There are two separate patches! The summer triad( March 21st- December 19th) and the winter triad (Dec. 20th-March 20th).
To complete the Tupper Triad challenge, hikers must conquer all three peaks. Each mountain presents its own unique characteristics and rewards hikers with stunning vistas at their summit. Let’s take a closer look:
- Mount Arab (2 miles): Standing at an elevation of 2,525 feet, Mount Arab is the tallest peak in the Tupper Triad challenge. This trail is 2 miles round trip and there is a fire tower on the top you can climb!
- Coney Mountain (2.2 miles): The second highest peak in the Tupper Triad challenge, Coney Mountain, stands at 2,265 feet. Once you get to the top, you are rewarded with a beautiful view of Tupper Lake and the surrounding Mountains! (This mountain is also popular for stargazing!)
- Goodman Mountain (3.4 miles): Completing the trio is Goodman Mountain, which reaches an elevation of 2,178 feet. Part of this trail is paved, only a quarter mile or so. We decided to time our hike for sunset, and this was perfect for that. Coming down the mountain in darker conditions, the pavement towards the end made things a lot easier!
Remember, as with any hiking challenge, it’s essential to research the trail beforehand, come prepared with appropriate gear including water, snacks, and navigation tools, and be aware of your physical limitations. Embrace the beauty of nature, respect the environment, and enjoy the journey as you conquer the Tupper Triad challenge.
Raquette River Brewing
Once you are done with your hike make sure you stop by Raquette River Brewing in Tupper Lake. Just like the Triad, Raquette River Brewing is family friendly too! (And dog friendly, even inside!) Fantastic food trucks come by, and there is often live music and events. Then, register online to add your name to the Triad roster so that you can receive your patch!
Explore Downtown Tupper
Swiss Kitchen- A simple no frills local spot to grab some grub! (Cash only)
Adirondack Store & Gallery– A little pricey but so nice inside! You should at least window shop in here.
Spruce & Hemlock Gifts and Bakery- A great place to pick up reasonably priced souvenirs!
Birch Boys– If you like natural medicine, herbs, teas and tinctures you need to stop in at this store! They offer sustainably harvested chaga and mushroom goods and are extremely knowledgable.
The Wild Center
For those seeking educational and interactive experiences, The Wild Center provides a fascinating insight into the wildlife and ecosystems of the Adirondacks. Walk the wooded trails, play up on the Wild Walk, or soak in the 54,000 sq ft of exhibit halls inside! It can be easy to spend most of your day here.
The Washboard
Check out this Donut Shoppe/Laundromat! You may be skeptical going in. Normally, laundromats aren’t known for delicious food, but don’t be wary. The donuts are made fresh and are surprisingly scrumptious. The frosting may be different from what you would find at a Dunkin’ Donuts. It’s a bit thicker and not everyone’s cup of tea. However, my family certainly enjoyed the stop and the kind people who work there.
Outside the Town
If you are in town for a longer visit, stop by the surrounding towns as well! Saranac Lake is only 30 minutes away and has tons to offer! Lake Placid is about a 40 minute drive as well. Or check out some of the high peaks! No matter where you go, this region will stun you.
If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the small-town charm and natural beauty of the Adirondack region, Tupper Lake is the perfect destination to unwind, reconnect with nature, and create lasting memories.
