Montauk NY is a charming coastal town located at the easternmost point of Long Island. It is known for its beautiful beaches, scenic hiking trails, and historic lighthouse. Here are the top things you should put on your list for a quick day trip to Montauk NY!
This weekend we had someone coming to NY who wanted to see Montauk for the first time. It was a tight weekend, but, since we are based out of Long Island for the time being, and I work locally, we had to get out there and show them around!
Getting There
If you are coming out from the city, you don’t necessarily need a car! You could take the train. However, some spots are far and you may need a bike (they have rentals here) or be committed to getting a ton of steps in!
If you decide to drive out from the city you have the opportunity to stop in Bridgehampton, Easthampton, and Southampton before you even arrive in Montauk! Each town has a bunch of cute shops and spots to eat. (Some a bit pricy)
I would recommend going as early as possible to these spots if you decide to go in the summer months. The lines and crowds take away a bit from the Montauk experience, so the earlier the better!
What to Do
The Bluffs
We got out to Montauk at about 9:30. First, go into Camp Hero State Park (the same loop as the lighthouse).
Here you will drive down a very short amount and see a gravel/sand road on the first left, you can see the water from the car!
There is a quick walk along the bluffs, with a great view of the lighthouse, and swallows swooping overhead.
Camp Hero State Park
Next, continue into the Camp Hero Park (maps available online!). Check out the tower that still stands (barely!)
If you love a conspiracy, read up on the Montauk Project, which helped to inspire the show Stranger Things! Different World War 2 structures and wildlife can be seen around the park as well
By the time we had looked around it was almost 10:30 and time to head over to the lighthouse.
Montauk Lighthouse
Montauk Point Lighthouse was completed in 1796 and is still in operation today, serving as a popular tourist attraction and maritime museum.
We got there just as it opened and bought our tickets, giving us access to the museum and access to walk up to the top of the lighthouse itself.
After you visit the lighthouse and museum you may be thinking about lunch options!
George’s Lighthouse Cafe
I’ve eaten at a few places in Montauk and was pleasantly surprised on this last visit with George’s Lighthouse Cafe, located in the same loop as the lighthouse itself.
The service we received was not ideal, but the food we ordered was great! And it was super convenient to not have to park again! We chose a spot under an umbrella on the outside patio, giving us a great view of the lighthouse and water.
Shopping
Next, you will want to check out the town and Main drag. Here you will find a bunch of souvenir shops where you can buy mementos and knickknacks at a bunch of different price points. There are also really neat thrift and antique spots!
Montauk Brewery
Montauk Brewery is a short walk from the main strip, and a fun spot to hang out. They have a variety of beers on tap, and are dog-friendly! It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the laid-back Montauk vibe.
More than a day trip?
If you make a weekend trip out of your visit there are plenty of other activities to take part in! Check out the beautiful beaches and watch the surfers among the waves, take part in the summer nightlife, visit more historical sites, and sample more restaurants!
Spending the night in Montauk can be expensive. If you want to stay overnight on a budget, during nonpeak season, check out Hither Hills State Park! You can camp right near the ocean! But! There are some reservation quirks at this campground due to its popularity. During peak season you must have a 7-night reservation, in non-peak season a minimum of 2 nights, but during peak or non-peak they allow walk-ins to camp for less than the minimum stay depending on availability.
IMPORTANT TIPS:
- The weather in Montauk can be a bit cooler than the rest of Long Island, so check the weather before you head out and prepare for potential rain and wind!
- Long Island has a massive tick problem. If you hike, make sure you check yourself for ticks after every hike, not just at the end of the day!
- Living locally, I don’t have a favorite local lobster roll! They are all very similar, I usually go with what is cheapest! (My favorite lobster rolls are from Archie’s in Maine!)
- Ubers and taxis can be limited, and some spots will require a car to get to!
- Much of “The End” shuts down in the winter. The lack of crowds can be great, but if you aren’t local you may have a hard time finding open restaurants and shops.
In conclusion, Montauk NY is a charming, laid-back destination with plenty of natural beauty and fun activities to offer. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation or an adventure-packed getaway, Montauk is worth a visit!
