Mystic, Connecticut is a place where history, leisure, and natural beauty converge. Whether you find joy in immersing yourself in the town’s maritime past, exploring unique shops and eateries, or simply taking in the tranquil coastal vistas, Mystic offers a delightful escape from the ordinary. So, pack your bags, set sail on your own adventure, and discover the enchantment of this charming New England town!
Our trip started on the Cross Island Ferry. We currently live in Suffolk County, so getting to Mystic by ferry saved us some time, and we always enjoy the ride. It is a bit pricey to take the ferry with a vehicle + driver, and a passenger, but this time we were only going one way so it wasn’t too bad! Also, there is nothing like being on the water to get you in the mood for a nautical themed day.
Departing from Orient Point, the ferry passes multiple lighthouse (LIST). You can sit up top outside and take in the sun and breeze, on the inside in a booth, in the bar area. B got a croissant, bacon, egg and cheese with an iced coffee for $10.00. A pretty good deal especially on board.
One hour and twenty minutes later, we had arrived in Mystic! The aquarium was an easy 20 minute drive from the New London Ferry Terminal. Parking at the aquarium is free which was a plus. We arrived at about 11am. The lot was pretty full, but we did a lap and got a close spot as someone was leaving. In the busy summer months I would probably suggest getting there early! It is a lot of walking around without shade as well, so earlier is better!
We have been to two other aquariums this summer, the New England Aquarium in Boston and the Long Island Aquarium (both mentioned in the linked posts!) We were still dazzled at Mystic Aquarium and were impressed with all that it had to offer- over 300 species! You definitely won’t be bored here, with sharks, beluga whales, penguins, seals, sea lions, a giant pacific octopus and more! Check the schedule that day so you don’t miss the California Sea Lion Show!
Throughout the aquarium there were employees EVERYWHERE. At every animal exhibit outside there was someone to answer our questions, or actively speaking to the crowd gathered around with a headset and speaker. We loved this and learned so much about each animal.
Watch the Beluga Whales
Watching the belugas was our favorite part of the aquarium. You may get lucky enough that you catch the trainers working with the belugas. They vary the enrichment time throughout the day, so that the animals are never bored and in a stagnant routine.
The interpreter told us that they actually put sunscreen on the belugas! (Who wipe it off on the glass edges of the enclosure!)
Hang out with Astro the Stellar Sea Lion
Astro, has captured the hearts of many at Mystic Aquarium. Despite efforts to reintegrate Astro into the wild sea lion population, it became apparent that he was better off under the care and protection of the dedicated team at the aquarium. As fate would have it, Mystic Aquarium now proudly stands as the sole institution in the continental United States entrusted with the responsibility of caring for a Stellar Sea Lion.
While Astro may not be swimming freely in the wild like his fellow sea lions, he has undoubtedly found a loving and caring home at Mystic Aquarium. His presence serves as a constant reminder of the important work being done to safeguard these remarkable creatures, and he continues to inspire awe and admiration in all who have the privilege of encountering him.
Adorable African Penguins
Watching the playful penguins glide gracefully through the crystal-clear water of their habitat is always a favorite activity for visitors of all ages.
If you prefer to get a closer look, and out of the sun, you can venture down to the underwater viewing area. From here, you can observe these adorable creatures up close and personal, as they swim and play right before your eyes. Witnessing their antics and interactions with one another is a truly unforgettable experience that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for these incredible creatures.
And while you’re enjoying the penguin exhibit, why not treat yourself to a refreshing Del’s Lemonade? We didn’t regret buying one! This iconic local beverage is a true lifesaver in the summer heat.
The Main Gallery
The indoor, Main Gallery has a lot to take in. There were two touch tanks open, enormous glass exhibits, many species of jellies, sharks, fish, Giant Japanese Spider Crabs, and an octopus! There are a few spots with benches, and it is nice to enjoy all of the sights out of the heat or cold. Its easy to spend a bunch of time here, and there are tons of great photo opportunities!

Olde Mistick Village
After exploring the aquarium, we walked down to Olde Mistick Village. You are able to see the Village from the Aquarium entrance and can keep your same parking spot!
This cute shopping area has TONS of different stores. The range of items and types of shops was truly surprising. USually when travelling I see a lot of tourist shops selling the same vinyl print tshirts. Olde Mistick Village had quirky stores like Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop, and The Cloak and Wand, as well as clothing and jewelry stores, an adorable and cozy tea room, typical souvenir stores, toy stores, pizza shops, doughnuts, coffee shops and more!
You can check out a list of all the stores located in this open-air shopping village here!
Our favorite stores:
Franklin General Store is a must-visit destination for food lovers. This charming store offers a wide selection of preserved foods, such as jams, jellies, sauces, butters, spreads, jerky, and fudge. Whether you’re looking for a unique gift or treating yourself, you’ll find something to indulge in here. The variety and quality of products will surely impress you.
Pop on the Block – We couldn’t resist checking out this place because one of our crew members was a huge popcorn fan! And boy, were we pleasantly surprised! Not only were the prices pretty reasonable, but the folks working there were super friendly too! We ended up grabbing a bag of the BBQ King popcorn, but let me tell you, there were loads of other mouthwatering options to choose from!
Sticky Situations- WOW! We had a fantastic time in this store! Its all about samples! There were rows of different delicious honey flavors to try. Orange Blossom, Peppermint, Elderberry, Lavender and Garlic are just a few! Some were recommended to be used in tea, on cookies, or even when making wings. We also really enjoyed the apply syrup sample they had that dispensed out of the tree!
In the same building, there were also olive oil samples! You should definitely stop in here on your visit. It is great for picking up something for yourself or someone back at home!

Once we had walked through Olde Mistick Village, taking in all of the cute store-front windows we headed over to the Mystic River Historic District.
Mystic River Historic District
The unique drawbridge on the Mystic River is both captivating and charming. The bridge gracefully separates and rises, enabling boats to pass through, while providing an enchanting spectacle for onlookers along the riverbank.
Parking can be hard to find on busy summer weekends. Stay strong though! And try to time out crossing the drawbridge. Every hour at the 40 minute mark the drawbridge raises from May-October. We didn’t time it out well, and were stuck in traffic for about 20 minutes.
If you want to take in the Mystic River and drawbridge, head into the aptly named Mystic Draw Bridge Ice Cream and grab yourself a cone! The deck outside offers great views of the bridge where you can eat and relax. Being Dairy Free and Nut Free, I had the Lemon Sorbet, but heard fantastic things about the Fresh Fruit Strawberry!
Following your sweet treat you will likely want to shop at the beautiful stores they have in the Mystic River Historic District. You may even want to stop in at Mystic Pizza, the pizza parlor that inspired the 1988 movie starring Julia Roberts!
One of the highlights of Mystic is its maritime heritage, which is beautifully showcased at the Mystic Seaport Museum. Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of seafaring as you explore historic vessels, visit the shipyard, or stroll through the recreated 19th-century coastal village. From learning how to tie nautical knots to watching skilled craftsmen restore wooden boats, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. If you have more time to visit, this spot should definitely be on your list!
