Becoming ill during your vacation or immediately after can be such a bummer. Looking around at the airport I will see people coughing without covering their mouths, sneezing into their hands and then touching escalator railings or the TSA bins. It is no wonder that folks often come down with a cold after going on a getaway. Travelling as often as I do, I have come up with 9 easy ways to avoid germs and minimize your chance of getting sick!

Wipes and Hand Sanitizer
Airports involve a lot of touching. Touching elevator buttons, escalator railings, TSA bins, gate seats, overhead bins, luggage, seat back trays. The list goes on and on. I carry wipes and hand sanitizer with me at the airport within easy reach.
As soon as I get on the plane, my husband puts our bags overhead while I wipe down our seats and tray tables with these easily packable wipes. (You’d be surprised at how dirty those wipes get!)

Wash your Hands
Wipes and Hand Sanitizer will only go so far. Whenever I am about to eat, or do anything that involves touching my face I make sure I wash my hands. While hand sanitizer will kill the germs, washing your hands will remove all of that grime off of your hands.
Consider a Mask
When flu and covid are on the rise my husband and I will throw on a mask once we are on a plane. I never mask in day to day life, but I have start packing a mask on recent trips. This came in especially handy when we were sat next to an entire sick family on a recent trip who coughed the entire 6 hour flight, and were getting sick in the bathroom.
Don’t Touch Surfaces Unnecessarily
I have to drill this one into my family members! The airport is not a sensory experience where you must touch everything. Some folks need to hang onto a railing for stability, but my family is perfectly capable of not touching handles and railing for the most part. Keep reminding yourself and your family as you travel to keep their hands off of things!
Be Cognizant of Where you Put your Phone
This is a big one. We are so connected to our devices, that if your phone is dirty, your hands and face are also dirty! I don’t carry around phone wipes often, so when I don’t I make sure I am aware of where I am putting my phone down!
If you do have room in your bag for tech wipes I highly recommend this brand!

Don’t Touch your Face
I struggle with not touching my face, but it is so important. Not only will touching your face with germy hands potentially get you sick, it may also make your skin break out!
Get Some Sleep
Sleep is an important component of keeping your immune system in balance. Lack of sleep makes you more susceptible to getting sick. Try to keep up your schedule to the best of your ability. Check out my post on maintaining a sleep schedule here!
I use this inexpensive eye mask to get sleep on the plane, and in my hotel room if the lights outside are too bright!

Hydrate
Drink water! Drinking water not only helps you feel better day to day, but it will help your immune system in the long run. I try to buy a bottle of water, or refill my reusable bottle, before getting on my flight. In flight, I try to stick to water and not get any sugary drinks or caffeine.
Take Airborne and Other Supplements
I really like the airborne gummies, and make sure that I keep up with all of the supplements recommended by my doctor. Make sure that you do the same so that you keep yourself balanced and healthy! I enjoy taking these airborne gummies, and find them much easier to take than the chalky tablets!
